AN ATTEMPT to fly an exact replica of the first wholly-British built plane has failed.
The Manchester Museum of Science and Industry (MMSI) and aeronautical engineers yesterday attempted to fly their replica of Alliott Verdon Roe's triplane, which made history on Walthamstow marshes in 1909.
Two attempts were made to get the plane airborne at Woodvale Airport, in Merseyside, but it would not leave the ground.
An MMSI spokeswoman said the launch of the plane was prevented by insufficent engine power, as the plane was slightly heavier than Alliot Verdon Roe's original.
The replica took more than three years to build and was made using 1909 technology including an original original JAP engine removed from a water pump in Yorkshire.
There are no plans for another attempt.
