RUMOURS that a historic garage could soon be demolished have been denied by developers.

Speculation has grown in recent weeks about the future of the Cuckfield Garage in Wellington Road, Wanstead - with residents and conservationists fearing the landmark building could be pulled down without permission like the former Truffles Cottage in the High Street.

But Richard Bonshor, agent for developers Belgrave Properties, contacted the Guardian to say that the building would NOT be demolished and that work to create two new flats and shops at the site would strictly follow the plan approved by the council.

He said: "Contrary to any rumours the building will not be demolished. We will redevelop it according to the plan approved by the council.

"We did want to demolish it but this original application was turned down by the council and we will respect that.

"Work will be carried out on its roof, which will be temporarily removed, but the old slates will be returned again."
