WOODHOUSE Players have the prestigious honour of presenting the first new UK translation of Jean Anouilh’s L’Alouette (The Lark) in more than 50 years this month.
A classic re-telling of the story of Joan of Arc, The Lark draws parallels between the English occupation of France during the middle ages and the Nazi occupation of 1940-44. The Woodhouse Players’ version is the first to be approved in the UK by the estate of Anouilh since Christopher Fry’s London production in 1955.
Director Gill Taylor, who also translated the work, says: “Translating and directing L’Alouette has been an ambition for me for 30 years or so and I am thrilled to be able to fulfil that ambition with a group of such talented local performers.”
The Lark is at the Welsh Church Hall, Leytonstone on Friday, October 30, Saturday, October 31, Friday, November 6 and Saturday, November 7. Tickets: tickets@woodhouseplayers.co.uk or 020 8504 3872 (£7/£4 concs)
