A CONTROVERSIAL application to build a 29-bedroom hotel near a junction with one of the borough's busiest roads will be determined by councillors on Tuesday.
The building, in Cedars Avenue, which currently contains flats and kitchens, will be extended and converted into a hotel, if permission is given.
The site is behind shops on Hoe Street, just yards from Walthamstow Central railway station and more than 70 residents have written in opposition to the plan, saying it will lead to parking problems and extra noise, litter and traffic.
Opponents also believe the site is not big enough for a hotel of that size.
A report to come before councillors on Tuesday recommends that permission is granted.
It said: “There is a shortage of hotel accommodation within the borough and a town centre location such as this is considered to a good one for a new hotel facility.
“The residential accommodation that would be lost is not of a high standard, with habitable room windows facing onto either the public footway or rear access.”
Officers also say the majority of visitors to the hotel will use public transport or taxis and that the devlopment it is unlikely to make the “existing problem” of litter worse.
The report recommends granting permission on the condition the developer pays for a disabled parking bay in Cedars Avenue and contributes £15,000 towards environmental improvements to Walthamstow town centre.
The applicants are listed as Mr A Shahed and Mr Naveed.
