NEW artist's impressions of the only Olympic facilities to be based in Waltham Forest have been released.
The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has been granted permission to build a venue in Eton Manor, Leyton, which will be used for paralympic tennis and archery.
Three swimming pools, a water polo pool and a synchronised swimming pool all to be used for temporary training purposes, will also be built.
After the Games, Eton Manor, which once housed the popular Eton Manor Boys Club, will be the site of a permanent hockey centre and pitches, tennis courts and five-a-side football pitches.
John Armitt, ODA chairman, said: “Eton Manor is steeped in sporting history.
“In the early 1900s it was a community sport sporting facility and later it became Eton Manor Boys’ Club and the Old Boys’ Club, and it quickly gained a reputation as an elite sporting association.
“We will be strengthening this sporting legacy and bringing it into the 21st Century by providing a unique mix of sports facilities for athletes and the local community.”
But the successful application for planning permission and new images are unlikely to placate those who feel that Waltham Forest should have received more from the Games.
Cllr Matt Davis, Conservative council group leader, has repeatedly criticised former council leader Clyde Loakes for not fighting for more facilities and regeneration for Waltham Forest.
Cllr Davis, along with politicians from other parties and residents, feels the borough should have secured a promise that the Hall farm Curve rail link between Stratford and Chingford be re-opened.
The multi-million Cathall Construction Skills Centre, in Leytonstone, will also not open until next May, meaning there will not be time for people to complete courses and then work on the 2012 construction site.
