LABOUR councillors are calling for a freeze on council tax next year.

Labour, the largest group on the council, has not made it clear how the measure would be paid for, but leader Chris Robbins insists it can be done without affecting front-line services.

He said: “Labour is on the side of residents in Waltham Forest. We want to protect people who are on low or fixed incomes and by freezing council tax we are doing what we can to help people.

“This should come as a timely boost to help residents struggling with bills.”

The Labour group would need the support of their coalition partners Liberal Democrats in full council in order to set its preferred tax level.

Council tax increased by 1.9 per cent this year.
