POLICE are advising homeowners to be vigilant after a bogus caller impersonating a police officer was reported last Wednesday (October 28).
The man knocked on the door of a house in Wanstead and claimed to be an officer doing spot-checks on the security levels in local homes. He showed an ID card without a photo, which was not a police warrant card.
The man is described as 5'9” tall, around 30 years old, of slim/medium build, with curly hair. He spoke with an African accent, was carrying a white satchel/shoulder bag and wore a long dark rain coat.
Police are reminding residents of their 'No Appointment, No Entry' scheme and should not answer the door to anyone without checking their identification first. All police officers will carry photo ID with the Metropolitan Police logo. Any phone numbers should be looked up for verification and not dialled.
If you have experienced any similar incidents contact your local police station or phone 0300 123 12 12. If you believe the caller is suspicious in any way, dial 999.
