ONE of five British soldiers shot dead in Afghanistan this week was born in Walthamstow, it has emerged.
Warrant Officer Class 1 Darren Chant died alongside Sergeant Matthew Telford, Guardsman Jimmy Major, Corporal Steven Boote and Corporal Nicholas Webster-Smith, of the Royal Military Police, after an Afghan policeman turned his gun on them behind a secure checkpoint on Tuesday.
The soldiers had just returned from a patrol when the policeman opened fire without warning before fleeing.
A special wreath in memory of Mr Chant will be laid as part of the Remembrance Day commemorations at the town hall on Sunday.
