A CHINGFORD policeman is to take on a series of physical challenges in aid of armed forces charity Help for Heroes.

Sergeant David Johns, of Endlebury Safer Neighbourhoods Team, will undertake a 'gym test' at Chingford Foundation School on November 28 in a bid to raise cash for wounded soldiers.

He will pit himself against nine other competitors, including a firefighter, a member of St John Ambulance and a pupil from the school, in a series of timed fitness tests.

Sgt Johns said: “My brother-in-law is out in Afghanistan at the moment with the Royal Engineers. That's what prompted me to do something.”

The event will also feature the Epping Forest Pipe Band, who will march in the competitors at 1.30, as well as stalls with information on the armed forces and the police.

Sgt Johns added: “Danny Butler will also be there as he's my brother-in-law's brother and he's a professional boxer with a couple of titles as well.

“He'll be representing the families of members of the armed forces.”

So far, Sgt Johns has raised £378 but is hoping to reach £1,000 before the event takes place.

There will also be a raffle, with prizes donated from local shops, and an opportunity for children to have a look inside emergency vehicles.

A collection will also be taken on the day and all proceeds will go to Help for Heroes.

The event begins at 12.30pm.
