A MAN airlifted to hospital following a horrific three-car smash is no longer in a critical condition.

A 64-year-old man was cut out of a red Ford Ka, following an accident involving a black BMW and a third blue car in Mansfield Hill, Chingford, on Sunday morning.

Although he remains in intensive care at the Royal London Hospital, he will be moved onto a ward as soon as a bed becomes available and his injuries are no longer life-threatening.

The other motorists involved escaped injury.

The accident happened on the approach to the mini-roundabout which joins Mansfield Hill, Waltham Way and Sewardstone Road.

Residents living nearby have since called for the junction to be made more safe.

A 45-year-old-man, who was driving the black BMW, has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving and dangerous driving.

He has been bailed until February 17.
