DOZENS of Jewish children spent a day preparing and wrapping a host of festive gifts to charities, soldiers and even the police as part of an event organised by the Chigwell and Hainault Synagogue.

The 'Mitzvah Day', held on Sunday (November 15), saw the children pack 20 shoe boxes stuffed with gifts for Barnardo's, with another load also prepared for the Faith Foster Care group.

The youngsters also took the time to write 35 letters and cards to soldiers in Afghanistan, while gifts were also handed out to local police officers and residents living near the synagogue in Limes Farm Avenue, Chigwell.

Mitzvah Day organiser, Melvyn Gandz, said: “In these credit crunch times it’s good to know we can all still do our bit for charity by giving, not cash, but a little time.

“That’s what Mitzvah Day is all about and I am delighted that so many people turned out to support our event.”

The project was one of around 250 similar events organised nationally on the day.
