SERIOUS road accidents are inevitable unless something is done about a concealed car park entrance, a woman has said.
Wendy Douglas, 38, said she often uses the Cornmill Meadows car park, in Waltham Abbey, to walk her dog in the fields of the Lea Valley Park.
She claims she regularly takes her life into her own hands when she she makes the right turn out of the car park on to the notorious Crooked Mile.
She said: “I've been using the car park for a while. I've seen so many near misses with great big lorries careering down on me. It's just getting too many.
“One time I had my nephew in the car and a speeding motorist came up the road flashing his lights and not slowing down. There was nothing I could do because the amount of time you have got is pretty minimal. I had to do a wheel spin just to get out in time.”
The Crooked Mile has been the scene of numerous serious crashes over the years and Ms Douglas, of Hylands Road, Walthamstow, said another one would soon be forthcoming unless additional measures were put in place at the car park.
She said: “The 40mph speed limit sign comes just before the turning and there's no sign so people don't know they're coming up to a turning.
There's a number of things they could do: reduce the speed limit, cut back the vegetation, put in a sign for the turning. It's just not good enough.
“Because the field nearby is being used as an Olympic site more and more people are using the Cornmill Meadows. It's only a matter of time before someone has an accident there.”
A spokesman for Essex County Council said: “We will be looking into the situation at Cornmill Meadows car park to decide whether additional signage is necessary to give vehicles further warning.”
