A LEADING councillor has said the authority will consider making alterations to a road junction following a horrific three-car-smash.

A 64-year-old man remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition after being cut out of a red Ford Ka, following an accident in Mansfield Hill, Chingford, on Sunday morning.

Residents living nearby have since called for the mini-roundabout, at the junction of Mansfield Hill, Sewardstone Road and Waltham Way, to be made more safe after a number of accidents in recent years.

The roundabout was installed 15 years ago, replacing a T-junction, in an attempt to keep the traffic flowing and prevent accidents caused by cars pulling out in front of speeding vehicles from a standing start.

Despite the residents' concerns a council spokesman said there have only been three reported accidents at the junction in the last three years.

But following the latest crash, Cllr Bob Belam, cabinet member for environment, said: “We will be investigating this incident and carefully considering whether any improvements can be made to the roundabout.

“I hope the injured motorist makes a rapid recovery."

The other vehicles involved in Sunday's crash, which happened at about 7.30am, were a back BMW and a blue car.

The driver of the BMW, a 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and dangerous driving and has been bailed until February 17.
