TRIBUTES are being paid to the memory of a local hip hop star, who died of a heart attack at the age of 44 earlier this week.
Derek B – whose real name was Derek Boland – was the first Black British rapper to appear on Top Of The Pops. He was born and brought up in Woodford and attended Nightingale School.
He achieved his first chart success in 1988 with two Top 20 hit singles, 'Good Groove' and 'Bad Young Brother'.
He also DJed extensively across the UK and was a popular host on Kiss FM during its early days as a pirate station. But Derek is perhaps best known for his hand in writing the Anfield Rap, which was performed by members of Liverpool FC's squad ahead of their FA Cup final against Wimbledon in 1988.
Fiona Smith, who went to school with the future star in the 1980s, said: “He was at the top of his game. He was a great role model for young black men in Woodford, at the forefront of rap music when there were no other black rappers from the UK. He was a pioneer.”
