A MAN is set to climb 1,000 steps in the iconic Gherkin building in aid of charity.

Dominic Evers, 43, of Walthamstow, will take the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children's (NSPCC) Step Change challenge early next year and has already begun training.

Mr Evers, who works for the NSPCC as a senior development manager, is hoping to the event will raise as much as £125,000 for the charity's Child's Voice Appeal.

The NSPCC has been given special access to the Gherkin and teams and individuals will run up 38 flights of stairs to reach the top during the challenge on February 7.

Mr Evers said he decided to take part in Step Change to help NSPCC protect more children at risk of abuse.

He plans to raise £500 on his own.

Limited places are still available to take part in the challenge and funds will go to the £50 million Child's Voice Appeal.

The appeal aims to expand and develop ChildLine and the NSPCC helpline.
