A CROSS-party group of councillors will examine the controversial expansion of London City Airport.

The group, which will also consist of some council officers, will investigate whether the authority was notified of the plan to increase flights from the Royal Docks airport.

Newham Council say there was no need to include Waltham Forest in the consultation, despite the expansion leading to a sharp increase in air traffic in the skies above the borough.

However, it remains unclear whether Waltham Forest Council was contacted by the neighbouring authority over the City Airport plan.

Residents living under the flight paths have raised strong objections over increased noise and pollution levels.

The council has condemned the expansion in letters to London Mayor Boris Johnson and Newham Mayor Sir Robn Wales.

Enquiries are also under way to establish if the Civil Aviation Authority contacted the council.

A consultation is currently underway on the Draft Noise Action Plan for London City Airport, which aims to minimise the impact on those living nearby.

A council spokesman said: “The deadline for responses is Friday January 15 and we will ensure that a council response is sent.”

The Fight the Flights group is pushing for a judicial review of Newham Council’s decision to allow the airport’s expansion.
