FRUSTRATED residents say drivers are still risking lives by parking on the kerb in a busy street - more than a year after they called on the council to tackle the problem.

People living in the streets off of Hermon Hill in South Woodford say the authority has done nothing to stop motorists parking on the kerb and blocking their view of oncoming traffic in the 12 months since the Guardian first publicised the problem.

Residents in Pulteney, Orford and Pelham Roads complain that the situation has got worse during the past 12 months - and believe it is only a matter of time before someone is killed or seriously injured.

A pedestrian died after a hit-and-run in that stretch of Hermon Hill in September 2007.

Chris Jones, of Orford Area Residents Association, helped lead calls for double yellow lines and traffic calming measures a year ago.

He said: "Things have got significantly worse here.

"Sometimes there are so many cars parked on the kerb you have to pull the nose of your car right out but the traffic down here won't stop.

"There was a fatality on this stretch of the road a year or so ago, and it's only a matter of time before someone else is badly hurt.

"We've even got someone using the kerb to sell vehicles from. A big van has been parked near the junction with Orford Road for several weeks.

"There are yellow lines at the junctions and they need to extend these to the rest of the road."

Ann Masters of Pulteney Road, said: "It's got really bad here.

"Nothing has been done to improve things. People just use the road as a free car park so that they can use the Underground station.

"There seems to be some confusion over who is supposed to be dealing with this."

A council spokeswoman said: "Footway parking bans in this area are being enforced and complaints from motorists following the issue of Penalty Charge Notices are being received.

"However, we will look into the matter of this road not being enforced and ensure our enforcement contractor includes it in his next visit.

"Regarding yellow lines, traffic management orders have been raised to support the provision of "At Any Time" restrictions around a number of junctions in this area and these will be installed shortly."
