POLICE have arrested 13 people following a crackdown on domestic, race hate and homophobic crime.

Two men were charged following Operation Athena on November 26.

Akeem Prince, 20, of Tadworth Parade, Hornchurch, was charged with actual bodily harm, harassment and assault on police.

Tristan Holgate, 19, of Essex Road, Leytonstone, was charged with common assault

Five others were bailed to return pending further enquiries.

Another three people released with a police caution and three were released with no further action.

The operation was run by the borough's community safety unit.

DI Jane Gyford, of Waltham Forest Community Safety Unit, said: “Waltham Forest Police undertook many arrest enquiries across the borough which culminated in 12 people being arrested.

“This was an extremely successful day for Waltham Forest Police and moreover, supported the continuing drive to tackle domestic violence and other hate crimes.

“I would like to encourage victims of both domestic violence and hate crime to come forward and report crimes to the police, so we can ensure that they are investigated and victims are offered the support pathways necessary to meet their needs.”

The borough has seen the number of homophobic crimes more than double in the year to October 2009, compared with the same period in 2008.

The number of domestic crimes rose from 1,811 to 1,871 while the number of racist crimes remained roughly the same.
