POLICE have warned residents not to leave Christmas presents on display after a family caught a pair of thieves trying to snatch their gifts in the early hours of the morning.
The men had removed a window pane and were preparing to break in to the property, in Havering Gardens, Ilford, when one of its owners woke up and scared them off at about 4.30am.
Police believe the burglars targeted the family's home, on Monday, November 30, after spotting Christmas presents and wrapping paper lying on the table.
After seeing the homeowner the pair ran off in the direction of Somerville Road.
A police spokeswoman said: "This family were lucky but it is a clear reminder to all not to make it easy for a burglar.
"Residents should ensure curtains and blinds are closed before you go to bed, fit a security light outside your front door and always set your burglar alarm (if you have one).
"Presents or anything of high value left on display in a house or vehicle would more likely be targeted and if these simple steps are taken it could mean fewer burglaries being reported."
