A NEW food store has succeeded in gaining an alcohol licence despite the fears of neighbours that it could encourage anti-social behaviour.

Meftuni Erbil is due to set up a new shop at 43 Highbridge Street, in Waltham Abbey, and has now succeeded in his application to sell alcohol there from 8am to 11pm.

He had faced opposition from some residents over the move and 13 people had objected to the plan over concerns of increased noise, rubbish and problems with drinking.

But Mr Erbil said his new store would primarily concentrate on everyday groceries and providing a service to the community, and alcohol would be only a side concern.

Epping Forest District Council's licensing sub-committee agreed to provide him with an alcohol licence.

Mr Erbil told the Guardian: “I'm very happy. I think the local people are going to be happy as well when they see a professional store where they can benefit. They will have a local shop so they don't have to walk to Tesco all the time. We'll do our best not to leave any rubbish out. It will be very professional.”

He added he expected to open in two to three weeks' time.
