HI-TECH cameras which can calculate the average speed of a car for up to 15 miles may be trialled in a Highams Park road, it has been confirmed.

Transport for London (TfL) has approached the council about the possibility of piloting the next generation of speed cameras in Hale End Road.

According to media reports, Waltham Forest is one of three boroughs, along with Camden and Southwark expected to trial the cameras in 20mph zones.

A TfL spokeswoman said: "We will be considering how this new technology could support our efforts to improve road safety in the capital, which have made great progress in recent years.

“TfL has had discussions with a number of London’s boroughs, including Waltham Forest, to identify roads where time-distance speed cameras could be introduced in order to reduce road casualties.”

The council has agreed to consider a proposal for the implementation of the cameras but has yet to see any firm plans.

Cllr Bob Belam, council cabinet member for environment said: "We are determined to drive down accidents and improve the safety of all road users and these cameras could potentially save lives by reducing vehicle speeds. "We are keen to look at alternative method of slowing traffic, rather than relying on road humps that slow down the response times of the ambulances and fire engines."
