BUILDING work on a block of police cells is on track and the facility is due to open on time next August, say the Met.

Work on the custody suite, on land between Hainault Road and High Road, began 23 weeks ago and a “topping out” ceremony was held on Friday to celebrate the progress on the building to date.

Peter Ross, Met Police construction director: “This building will be crucial for policing the borough but is also part of our wider plans for similar new facilities to improve custody provision across the capital.’ Borough police commander Chief Supt Mark Benbow has said the centre is urgently needed to tackle a shortage in cell space in the borough.
