A 12-year-old girl was raped as she made her way to school.
A man approached the girl from behind and starting talking to her, at about 8.25am yesterday.
She was then grabbed, pulled into a front garden in Worsley Road and raped.
The attacker is described as a black teenager, with a tattoo on his right hand.
He rode away on a yellow bicycle and had a dark jacket zipped up over his face.
The girl had got off a bus on Leytonstone High Road and was walking along Cann Hall Road.
Investigating officer Detective Inspector Declan Williams, said: "This is a busy area at a busy time of day and we would appeal for anyone with information or who saw anything suspicious to please come forward.
“The victim remembers seeing a woman on the opposite side of the road shortly before she was attacked - if that woman was you please contact us.
"The victim, who is just 12 years old, has naturally been left deeply traumatised by what has happened."
A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is in custody.
Anyone with information is asked to call police on 8435 340.
Alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
