PARENTS and relatives were shocked to find themselves banned from taking photos or videos of their children's nativity play this Christmas.
Mark Poulter, headteacher of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School in Wanstead, told relatives that photos were banned for what he described as “Safeguarding reasons”.
Relatives arriving for the two nativity plays at the school in Chestnut Drive on Friday afternoon told the Guardian that the headteacher had gone too far.
Ernest Cifonelli, who has a nephew in year one, said: “I think it's complete and utter nonsense. I'm off to see my nephew this afternoon, and his Mum is in there but his Dad can't get away from work, so he's missing out and he won't even be able to see any pictures afterwards.
“I understand the argument about children's safety, which is important, but it seems pretty pathetic to me that you can't record anything during the performance.”
A mother who did not want to be named said: “The whole point of taking pictures is to have memories of your kids doing their best to perform as angels, stars, sheep in the shepherd’s flock or whatever it is they’re playing.
“The headteacher seems OK mostly but this thing about the photographs is a bit crazy.”
“In the school newsletter Mr Poulter wrote: “For Safeguarding reasons parents are able to film and take photographs before and after the performance itself providing that footage is taken for home use only and is not published on the internet.”
In a letter to parents published immediately after the nativities Mr Poulter wrote: “A few of you have given us some feedback about taking photographs and video.
As you know we always welcome your comments and ideas and are continuing to look into how we can best accommodate your wishes while safeguarding the interests of each and every one of our children and their families.”
