POLICE have called for a late-night bar's licence to be reviewed after a string of violent incidents.
Essex Police say there have been a number of fights and sexual assaults at Minx, in Loughton High Road, and its managers have refused to meet with them to find a solution.
According to police statistics there have been 31 criminal incidents related to Minx since September 2008 including one of grievous bodily harm, nine of actual bodily harm and two sexual assaults.
A police report into Minx states: “Essex Police has encountered problems with Minx when trying to deal with crime complaints. Following an incident on October 24, 2009, which resulted in three assaults a member of the door staff was requested in person to remain after the bar closed to enable officers to obtain a witness statement from him.
“This was agreed but upon returning the officers found that the doorman had left. The manager could not supply a contact number for the doorman.”
According to police, Minx has also refused to implement extra conditions on its licence despite previously agreeing them, and managers failed to attend a meeting organised for earlier this month.
Residents in nearby roads to Minx have long complained about noise and anti-social behaviour and many wrote in to object when it successfully gained an extension to its licensing hours in 2009.
Doreen Reeve, 73, of High Beech Road, Loughton, said: “I don't like it at all. It's so rowdy and loud you can't sleep at all. It's trouble. I even had one person come here and urinate against my hedge. I'd like to see it closed completely and something nice there. People have to have entertainment but there should be limits.”
Ben Morrison, 18, of High Beech Road, said: “The problem is that people come out late at night and of course you can hear them. We get drunk people here at three to four in the morning. I've been there a few times and it can be a bit rough. Maybe if they reduced the hours it'd be better.”
Residents have until January 7 to send comments to Epping Forest District Council at its offices in Epping.
The future of Minx will be decided at a yet to be determined licensing meeting.
