FORMER Epping Forest District Commander Jonathan Baldwin has been cleared of all fraud charges against him.
Chief Inspector Baldwin, 42, was removed from the top police job in Epping Forest last year, when an investigation into his mileage claims led to three charges of fraud by false representation.
He has now been cleared of all charges following a four-day trial at Ipswich Crown Court.
Prosecution barrister Gregory Perrins had claimed Mr Baldwin's expenses- which included a journey from Essex to Windsor recorded as 440 miles- were “grossly exaggerated”.
But Mr Baldwin maintained he had made innocent mistakes brought about through long-hours and work-related stress.
A spokeswoman for Essex Police said: "As a force, we are determined to ensure our officers and staff abide by the law and act with the highest probity and integrity.
"In this case the Crown Prosecution Service was presented with the facts to ensure an independent decision as to whether a prosecution was appropriate. The evidence was placed before the court and the jury found Mr Baldwin not guilty.
"Consideration will now be given as to whether he will be subject to Police Misconduct Regulations."
