A UNIVERSITY of East London (UEL) student has won an award for her music.

Mariama Samba 20, won the award for best achievement through music at the Sport of London awards, which celebrate the successes of young people.

Miss Samba has written and producing two albums showcasing a range of styles and is also involved with the charity At Risk of Offending.

Miss Samba, who is reading media and creative studies, said: “:It’s been a fantastic year so far and I’ve been really privileged.

I started writing poetry when I was fifteen and it was in response to racial tension in my school.

“I wanted to express that injustice and later on, those poems became my music. It’s an achievement to be at UEL too and I’m here to meet all my personal goals.”
