HOUSEHOLDS across Redbridge have been warned to beware of bogus callers during the Christmas period.
Some distraction burglars, who often target more vulnerable residents such as the elderly, have been offering 'free gifts' to people in order to gain entry to their homes.
The ploy is just one of a series of strategies used by thieves across the borough - with others also pretending to be tradesmen and charity workers to steal from unsuspecting residents.
A council spokesman said: "If you are concerned about the activities of doorstep callers operating in your area or are worried about elderly or vulnerable neighbours being targeted, contact Consumer Direct on: 08454 040506
"Alternatively report any suspicious callers to your local police Safer Neighbourhood Team, or call: 0300 123 1212.
"If you feel threatened or intimidated or require police assistance urgently don't hesitate to dial 999."
