A WOMAN who runs a popular animal sanctuary in Epping has said she may be forced to close it down because an “absurd” police investigation into the centre is causing her too much stress.

Tracy Cooper, 43, who runs the Small Animals Boarding and Rescue facility at her home in Hobbs Cross Road, Theydon Garnon, was arrested in October over allegations she had been illegally selling rare tortoises - an accusation she strenuously denies.

After an appearance at Maldon Police Station, Ms Cooper has now been bailed again until February, but says the on-going ordeal has ruined the centre's reputation and wrecked havoc on her life.

She said: "I just feel like I want to give it all up - there's only so much I can take.

"I've suffered with breast cancer on and off for 17 years and I don't think my health can handle this if it drags on much longer.

"I've been treated like a dangerous criminal by the police, I had my fingerprints and DNA taken, and they searched my house for three hours, but I haven't done anything incorrect.

"I used to work in finance but I set up the centre because I wanted to give something back and help the animals. If this carries on I might have to close it and lots of animals would be left without homes.”

The police investigation was launched following allegations that Ms Cooper had sold several rare reptiles housed at her facility and then pocketed the cash.

While she admits giving some tortoises away, Ms Cooper claims she only ever received donations for her centre in return.

Ms Cooper claims her arrest was triggered following a complaint from someone who was “jealous” of her centre.

The facility, which Ms Cooper says costs £40,000 a year to run, provides shelter for a variety of animals including various reptiles, dogs, ferrets and parrots, while also giving accommodation for pets while their owners are on holiday.

A spokesman for Essex Police confirmed that a 43-year-old woman had been bailed until February 10 on suspicion of breaching Control of Trade in Endangered Species regulations, pending further enquiries.
