A MAN assaulted in the street while trying to stop a fight has died.
David Joslin, 23, of Chingford, had been fighting for his life since the attack in Old Church Road on December 19.
Mr Joslin was rushed to Whipps Cross Hospital and then to the National Hospital for Neurology, in central London, but never regained consciousness and died shortly after 7am yesterday morning.
Police have today said Mr Joslin, who had been attending a works Christmas party in Chingford Mount Road, came across a confrontation between two groups of people outside the Strictly Silver jewellery shop.
Witnesses have said Mr Joslin tried to intervene as a peacemaker but was punched to the floor and knocked unconscious.
It is understood one of the groups came out of the Obelisk public house, in Old Church Road, and were involved in a fight with another group, which included three men and a woman.
DCI John McDonald, who is investigating the killing, said: “So far we have interviewed a number of witnesses from the group who had left the Obelisk pub and were involved in the fight, however no-one from the other group has come forward.
“I'm sure they are local people, and with the CCTV that we are now collecting from shops in the area I am confident we will identify them.
“I would ask that they make contact with us and give an account as to what happened.
"What is clear at this stage is that David appears to have died only because he was trying to stop a disturbance.
“We don't think he was associated with either group and he just happened to chance upon the incident as he was making his way home.
"It is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with David's family who are obviously devastated by their loss."
A post-mortem is due to take place this afternoon.
Nobody has yet been arrested in connection with the incident.
Anybody with information about the killing, which happened shortly before 1.30am, should call police on 8345 3985.
To remain anonymous call Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
