BRITAIN'S busiest speed camera has raked in more than £2 MILLION in the last five years, it has been revealed.
The 'Gatso' camera, on the southbound carriageway of the M11 in Woodford Green, flashed 38,243 motorists driving at over the 50mph limit over the last five years, according to police.
With each ticket carrying a £60 penalty, the camera could have generated a potential £2.3 million in fines.
Campaigners say this is the real reason behind the installation of the camera, but the authorities insist the device has been effective in reducing accidents at a known hotspot – despite being unable to produce figures to support the claim.
A Highways Agency spokesman said: “The camera on the M11 has been successful in addressing the cluster of collisions occurring approximately 900 metres south of the current camera location – which is what the camera was installed to do.
“The accident data does not show a pattern of accidents which would be consistent with the camera itself being a factor.
“The Government is committed to improving road safety. The best safety camera is the one that takes no fines at all, but deters drivers from speeding.”
