SCHOOLCHILDREN from Redbridge have enjoyed a memorable taste of life in France during a special trip to Boulogne.

More than 40 youngsters from Wanstead High School visited the port in northern France to compare the lifestyle of its residents compared to their counterparts in London.

Pauline Arkell, head of modern languages, said: "The students did lots of research before going and then completed surveys in Wanstead and Boulogne, trying to find out how environmentally conscious people living in these areas were.

We also visited the ecomuseum and saw the re-created 19th century school, farm and shops in the village of Saint Joseph in Guines, and made sweets at the local sweet factory in Boulogne.

"The students' behaviour was exemplary and they coped remarkably well especially when having to ask people in French all the questions on the survey.

"It was a very long day,. leaving school at 5am, but enjoyable and very worthwhile."
