ONE of the oldest camera clubs in the UK has been saved from closure after an unexpected donation from a generous local businessman.

The Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Club looked set to dissolve after nearly 110 years, because its members were struggling to find the cash needed to fund meetings, competitions and equipment.

But the future of the society, which was founded in 1893, appears to have been secured after Wanstead businessman Michael Finlay, of St Mary's Avenue, handed over a gift of £5,000 to prevent its demise.

The 45-year-old, who jointly owns building firm, Ark Build, said he had no hesitation in making the donation.

He said: "The club has a long history, and it provides an interesting past time for lots of people locally, including children.

"There's not enough for young people to do these days, and I wanted to make sure they could still enjoy taking part in this.

"The great thing about making a donation to a local group is that you know that 100 per cent is going to be used for what it is intended for.

"You don't always get that when you donate to larger charities."

The father-of-three's company also currently sponsors the West Essex Colts football team.

The club's secretary, Peter Hughes, approached his friend Mr Finlay for help when he realised how close the club was to folding.

He said: "This is a very generous donation.

"The future looked bleak for us before he stepped in to help.

"This money will be used to help pay for the rent of the meeting place, equipment such as a digital projector and professional judges to come and judge our competitions.

"We are very grateful."

The 51-year-old father-of-two has called for new members to come forward and join the club, which meets every other Tuesday at 55 Cambridge Park, Wanstead.

He said: "Myself and my son have learned so much about photography in the short time that we have been members.

"I can't recommend it enough."
