CAMPAIGNERS have vowed to oppose a controversial plan to build 24 new homes in the heart of Wanstead for a second time after developers appealed against the council's decision to reject it.

Members of the Counties Residents' Association (CRA) say they will fight against the 'unacceptable' scheme - which was originally turned down by the council in July - if it is passed by the Planning Inspectorate in the new year.

The move by Telford Homes comes after it agreed a series of amendments to a revised third application for the site with the CRA, which is due to go before the council's Regulatory Committee on January 18.

CRA chairwoman Helen Zammett said the group would back this revised scheme - but promised to oppose the second if the Planning Inspectorate grants permission for an appeal to be heard.

She said: "We worked with Telford's on the amendments that have been made to the third application, and we are relatively happy with it so hope it will be passed.

"If the third application is passed in January Telford's indicated it would go ahead with it, and that is what we would prefer.

"The second application remains completely unacceptable to us, so we would continue to oppose it.

"It's hard to predict what decision the Planning Inspectorate will make.

"We just hope the third application will be accepted so that it won't necessarily have to go to that stage."
