THE council has vowed to make sure the borough's roads are properly gritted ahead of tonight's expected snowfall.

The authority was criticised two weeks ago after some major roads in the borough, including a section of Kings Head Hill, Chingford, were not adequately gritted, causing cars to slide off roads and pedestrians to injure themselves.

A council spokesman said main arterial routes, hilly areas and roads around hospitals, fire stations and transport hubs will be prioritised.

The authority also says there are 89 salt and grit bins in the borough, visit www.walthamforest.gov.uk/index/transport/road-highway/highway-maint/winter-maint.htm to find out their location.

Cllr Bob Belam, the council's environment cabinet member, said: "Over the coming days we are ready to put hundreds of tonnes of grit onto streets and pavements right across Waltham Forest, working round the clock to tackle the snow and ice.

"“I want to thank those residents who have cleared ther driveways and pavements of ice in the past month and encourage residents around the borough to help us make our streets safe during the severe weather we are experiencing."
