A GIFTED young cyclist showed a group of top adult riders a clean set of wheels during a training session at a velodrome.

Will Holyman, of Forest School in Snaresbrook, outpaced several far more experienced cyclists during a flying lap of Calshot Velodrome.

The 16-year-old recorded an impressive lap time of 10.52 seconds during a race around the circuit, beating all of his fellow riders from the East London Velo Cycle Club junior section and a number of older riders in the process.

Fellow Forest boy James Green, 15, was also on hand to test out his skills during the second of the club's annual winter visits to the centre in Hampshire.

A spokesman for the school, in Snaresbrook, said: "It was a great day out with everybody making splendid progress on the boards. Apart from bus karaoke!

"The highlight was the flying lap - Will Holyman came out on top with a stunning 10.52 seconds, showing not only the ELV seniors but also all of the other riders in the session a 'clean pair of wheels.'

"To give you an idea of Will's achievement he outsprinted a couple of elite category senior and national riders.

"Calshot has the only indoor banked velodrome in the South of England. The track is 143 metres long with bankings of 45 degrees and straights at approximately 20 degrees.

"The track was built in 1997 and is used by a wide range of cyclists from novices to international-standard riders.

"Track cycling is the fastest growing branch of the sport, thanks in major part to the successes which the Great Britain squad have enjoyed at World Championship and Olympic levels over the last few years."
