AN APPLICATION to redevelop the Walthamstow Stadium site will be submitted by the end of the month.
London and Quadrant (L&Q) housing association and its consortium partners Yoo Capital Ltd have sent leaflets to residents living near the iconic site informing them of their intention to submit a “residential-led, mixed use development, including private and affordable housing, commercial and leisure uses and a creche.”
Public consultation events, at which residents can view layout drawings of the proposals and ask questions about the development, will be held over the next fortnight at the Holiday Inn, in Chingford Road, Walthamstow.
Rick Holloway, of the Save Our Stow campaign to re-open the dog track, said: “These public consultations are a total con and whitewash.
“How can they listen to residents' views and make any alterations to the plans within 10 days?
“We will attend the consultation events and strongly oppose the plans and we urge people who don't want to see cheap housing on the site to join us.”
Businessman David Sullivan, who has expressed an interest in purchasing the site and re-instating a dog track, will be hoping any application from L&Q will fail to receive planning permission.
A company owned by the former Birmingham City Football Club owner has written to L&Q outlining its ability to purchase the site.
Nick Budimir, an associate of Mr Sullivan, said: "I think it is wonderful they are applying, it gives the people of Walthamstow the opportunity to oppose this slum."
But he added that the consultation is "merely paying lip service" to the residents of the borough as there would be no way to alter the plans in such a short space of time.
The public consultation events take place on January 16, from 10am to 2pm and January 19 from 4pm to 8pm.
An L & Q spokeswoman said: "This consultation event is taking place to gather the views of local residents, they will be able to review our proposals and share their comments with us and ask any questions they may have with regards to our proposals."
