THOUSANDS of pupils will not return to school this week as dozens of schools across the borough stay closed for a third consecutive day due to the severe weather.

Snow and icy conditions have forced many primary, secondary and special schools, along with other education centres and colleges, to stay shut, while some say they plan to open but could shut at short notice if the weather deteriorates.

More snow is forecast for this evening (Friday January 8) and over the weekend, which could threaten school's plans to open into the next week.
