A COUPLE have celebrated 60 years of happy marriage together at a party on New Year's Eve surrounded by members of their family.

Frank and Florence Middlemiss, both 90, of Empress Avenue in Woodford Green, toasted their diamond wedding anniversary at home surrounded by friends and family, including their two daughters and many grandchildren.

The couple married on December 31 in 1949 and this year received a card from the Queen in recognition of their six decades of married life.

Dr Frank Middlemiss worked in the Geology Department at Queen Mary College in London, and loved teaching there so much he continued for several years after his official retirement.

He also gave advice to the builders of the Channel Tunnel and spent time specialising in the study of prehistoric shellfish.
