TESCO claims a controversial Express store has had a positive impact on the area around it since it first opened 12 months ago.

Opinion among traders in South Woodford High Road is divided over the impact of the new branch of the supermarket which was launched - near the junction with Derby Road - in January 2009.

The fears of some shopkeepers appear to have come true after the several told the Guardian they have seen significant falls in revenue since the outlet opened.

But other shopkeepers in the street say the store has helped attract much needed new custom to the area.

Tesco spokeswoman Carol Leslie said the Express store has helped persuade more people to shop locally: ""We have received excellent feedback from local people about our Express store in South Woodford, many of who are now shopping locally and not using their cars to travel to other areas.

"Sometimes it is all to easy to point the finger at Tesco but the recession has been a struggle for many people and unfortunately seen the demise of many businesses, including Wine Rack and Threshers which announced the closure of 391 stores in November.

"However, we are delighted to hear that many of our neighbouring shops are benefiting from our presence.

"Many local shops have a good reputation for personal service and have built a strong and loyal customer base on that.

"It is only by offering a variety of shops and services that an area can continue to attract customers and prosper."
