THE LIFE one of the pivotal figures in the history of London will be explored at a fascinating lecture this evening (Monday January 11).
Historian Georgina Green will host Forbidden Love and Broken Hearts, a talk on the lesser-known private life of fabulously wealthy 17th century merchant Sir Josiah Child, who was born in Wanstead in 1630.
Child – who was later made 1st Baronet of Wanstead – became governor of the hugely powerful East India Company in 1678, and was an early advocate for the free trade doctrine which became the dominant school of economic thought during the 18th century.
But despite amassing a massive fortune, Child found that money doesn't buy happiness, and this talk will delve into his private world, which contrasted dramatically with the public persona of this rich and successful man.
The meeting will be held at Ilford Hospital Chapel in The Broadway, Ilford, from 7:30-9:30pm.
Tickets cost £2 and are available from Jeff Page on 020 8524 5410 or jeff.page@ng-london.com.
