IT was anything but a happy new year for an unfortunate hamster picked up by the RSPCA after being dumped in a road.

The brown and white female – named Sunny by RSPCA staff – didn’t have much festive cheer when she was discovered in Brookscroft Road, Walthamstow, on January 3 after being spotted by a member of the public.

RSPCA inspector Nicola Middleton was called out to pick up the abandoned pet which is now being looked after at the RSPCA’s Southridge Animal Centre, near Potters Bar.

The inspector said: “The poor little thing had been dumped on the side of the road, but was still in her cage with a water bottle, some food and a bag of sawdust beside her.

"The chances are that she was an unwanted Christmas present.

“This sort of case shows exactly why you shouldn’t give animals as presents at any time of year. The reality of caring for a pet is very different from the rose-tinted idea many people have when they buy them for others.”

Inspector Middleton has appealed for anybody with information about the hamster to contact the RSPCA’s 24-hour cruelty line on 0300 1234 999.
