CYCLISTS worried about having their bikes stolen can get them permanently marked at a joint police and council event this weekend.

Police will be at Stoneydown Park Primary School, in Pretoria Avenue, Walthamstow, from 10am to 2pm, marking bicycles for free with a mark that cannot be removed, meaning if the bike is stolen and recovered it can be returned to its owner.

PC Andy Boxer, of the High Street safer neighbourhood team, said the police decided to act after concerns were raised by residents about bicycle thefts from stands at Blackhorse Road tube station.

On Sunday, the team will be in Walthamstow town square from 10.30am to 2pm to mark people's possessions with ultraviolet ink.

Both services are free.
