A GROUP of resourceful young hockey players from Redbridge overcame the snowy conditions to enjoy a victorious tour of the Netherlands.

The boy's first XI squad from Forest School were were supposed to have played three matches against their Dutch counterparts during a six day Christmas trip to Holland.

But the icy conditions meant the games had to be called off, with the youngsters playing - and winning - a dramatic game of 'snow football' against their rivals instead.

Sports teacher Andrew Foinette said the pre-season tour was one to remember for everyone involved.

He said: "Three matches against local Dutch sides and three days of training had been arranged to ensure we hit the ground running on our return to school in January.

"Sadly, Mother Nature had other ideas and the festive snowfall restricted us to just one day of training and no other hockey.

"Undeterred by this, the group nevertheless enjoyed their time in Holland, exploring the cities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam with great zeal.

"We even managed to beat the one Dutch hockey side we did meet in a hastily organised England v Netherlands snow football match, winning dramatically on penalties after a 4-4 draw.

"Other highlights included a trip to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and a harbour tour of Rotterdam.

"Our hockey may not have improved as a result of the trip but I hope the team spirit and bonding engendered by the side whilst away will be a positive outcome that we can take onto the pitch when the ice and snow eventually lift.

"My thanks go to staff and pupils alike for remaining in such good humour despite the trying conditions."
