GRITTERS will head out onto the streets of Redbridge once again this evening, as residents across the borough brace themselves for more disruption due to severe weather.
The council has announced it will only grit main roads this evening from 11pm, as weather forecasters predict freezing temperatures and snowfall over the next 24 hours.
A council statement said: “Our priority is to keep major routes, bus routes, shopping areas and hills clear, and other reported areas will be treated when possible."
A Redbridge Council spokeswoman said: "We have a list of priority routes that we focus our attention on first and this makes sure all the bus and main traffic routes are kept clear.
"Under normal circumstances we would then go on to the secondary routes, which tend to be the local traffic routes, areas with known ‘cold spots’ hills etc. However, the current situation is far from normal, the country is experiencing one of the worst winters for over 30 years and whole of the UK has been covered with a blanket of snow.
"As a result, there is a supply problem with road salt because of the national demand. Our stock has become low, but due to the conditions in the north of the country where the salt mines are located, our suppliers cannot guarantee when deliveries will reach us. To conserve our stocks we are treating our ‘Resilient Routes’ only."
