VOLUNTEERS and staff from an important community centre showed dedication above and beyond the call of duty during the recent severe weather.

People delivering hot food to members of the Redbridge Jewish Community Centre (RJCC), in Woodford Bridge Road, Ilford, braved the treacherous snow and icy conditions to provide vital meals when they were most needed last week.

Staff running the Meals on Wheels service usually serve 60-65 three-course meals across the community, but had to provide as many as 101 during the worst of the weather, as some people were unable to leave their homes.

The service covers seven patches and all but one of the volunteers were able to do their usual round in the minibus, aided by two selfless members of staff from the community centre itself.

Richard Shone, manager of the RJCC, praised the fantastic work of volunteers.

He said: “We are so grateful to all our volunteers, who stepped in to help ensure everyone received their meals.

“Our members really rely on this service, and our volunteers dedication meant that they were not let down.”
