THE LOOK of one of the borough's busiest High Streets is set to be dramatically improved after it was earmarked for a £250,000 make-over.

Ilford High Road will receive new seats, signs, bins and cycle racks as part of the face-lift which has been given the green light by Redbridge Council.

The refurbishment will also include the renovation of existing street furniture with any 'unnecessary' items removed and new trees planted.

A council spokesman said: "The work is expected to begin by March and will be funded by developers of the Pioneer Point scheme on Ilford Lane, following an agreement with the Council to set aside money for improvements to local roads and public spaces."

"The revamp of Ilford High Road adds to a range of improvements being rolled out across the town centre by local businesses through the Ilford Business Improvement District, the council and the police working together.

"Key initiatives include an additional police team on patrol, extra cleaning for shopfronts on Cranbrook Road and decorative covers for vacant premises on Ilford High Road and Cranbrook Road."
