LEADING councillors have tonight agreed draft proposals for £10m of savings made by cutting jobs and outsourcing services.
A total of £1.7m will be be cut from adult social care, including £497,000 saved by reducing staff as part of a government drive to personalise services.
The management of council buildings and facilities will be outsourced, leading to likely redundancies and there will be cost-cutting in the housing department.
Unison estimates more than 100 staff will be caught up in reorganisations and has vowed to oppose the plans.
The union is concerned about cuts to the cemetery team, Greenspace (which maintains parks) and job losses in the housing department.
The council's consumer advice service, which helps individuals and businesses with trading standards issues, is to be scrapped entirely and the union is also concerned about a reduction in the quality of services if plans to merge social worker teams at Whips Cross Hospital go ahead.
The savings are being made in order to freeze council tax for 2010/11.
A final decision on the authority's detailed budget and tax rates will be made by full council later in the year.
