HEALTH bosses have released advice on how to avoid catching the norovirus after an outbreak of the illness led to ward closures at Whipps Cross Hospital.

Hospital services at Whipps Cross and King George Hospital, in Ilford, have been stretched because of an increase in cases of the winter vomiting virus, and other seasonal ailments.

Among the tips supplied by NHS Redbridge are a warning to those with symtoms of the illness to contact NHS Direct or GPs first before heading to hospital.

Other suggestions include washing hands thoroughly after using the toilet, using disinfectant to get rid of bugs on household surfaces, and drinking lots of fluids if you fall ill.

Residents are also advised not to prepare food when ill or until 48 hours after symtoms of the virus have ceased.
