A POPULAR village hall could be forced to close unless volunteers come forward to help run it.
The facility, in Mill Road, High Ongar, has been managed by its current committee for just over a decade, but its chairman has warned that several members are set to resign from their posts due to ill health and old age.
A new hall was opened at the site in June 2008, but the high demand for bookings has meant a heavy workload for staff.
Chairman Peter Trevelyan said: "Most members of the current committee have been involved for over 12 years and some of them are experiencing some ill health problems and are finding the responsibility somewhat of a strain.
"If we do not find anybody then the village hall could become defunct - the current committee cannot continue indefinitely. They need help urgently."
He added that he was especially keen for some younger people to help out to ensure the long-term future of the facility.
